What are Viscosity Reference Standards?

A Viscosity Reference Standard verifies certain elements of a fluid’s viscosity.

Industries using them (for example) are food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. This could be to test kinematic viscosity,  CCS Dynamic Viscosity, Density, or tolerance to low or high temperatures.

Viscosity Reference Standards have precise, accredited viscosity values, ranging from low to high temperature, and are integral in quality control checks and audits. By checking a product against the Reference Standard, you ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction.

Viscosity Reference Standards have a few aliases, such as Viscosity Measurement Standards, and Viscosity Reference Materials. They can also be found under the umbrella term of Reference Standards or Reference Materials.

Are Viscosity Reference Standards Different to Reference Materials?

Almost! Reference Standards and Reference Materials are both points of comparison to ensure your fluid matches the correct specifications. Viscosity Reference Standards are a lot more specific.

Reference Standards can fall under various names, such as standard reference materials; reference materials; laboratory standards; reference-standard materials; and analytical standards.

As such, there can be slight confusion when ordering due to no consistent agreement on what to dub them. But Reference Standards and Reference Materials are synonymous.

Reference Standards are materials created for use as the standard in identification, purity, or assay tests.

If you were testing wine, spirits, gin, etc, there are a selection of different products under different names for checking the ABV% (Alcohol by Volume), Ethanol, or any other factors you’d need to guarantee a successful quality check.

For example, with wine, you could find an ABV% test, which would come under a [beverage] Reference Material, or a [organic] Reference Standard [for wine], but both would have the same purpose. It’s a different name for the same thing.

Certified Reference Materials have the stamp of approval from a trusted organisation, such as UKAS or ISO, to provide extra certification and validation. These can also be referred to as Certified Reference Standards. These ensure consistent quality and composition.

Viscosity Reference Standards are more specific – they are used for calibrating and verifying the accuracy of viscosity-measuring instruments or devices.

Viscosity Reference Standards fall under the umbrella of Reference Standards / Materials – whilst it is still one of these, it is a sub-category, focused on a specific testing aspect.
